Jerry Dixon

Obituary of Jerry Doan Dixon

Dixon, Jerry D. Bay City, MI Born in the bedroom of the family home his father built, Jerry was raised and lived most of his life on that property in Bay City. His final wish to have his family surrounding him, singing with him and loving on him at home happened, as he left for Heaven on Sunday, March 29, 2020. He graduated from T.L. Handy High School and worked many jobs as a young man. Most recently he retired June 1, 1998, after 32.5 years, from Bay City Powertrain- GM Corporation. Almost 59 years ago, on May 13, 1961, he married the love of his life, Patricia F. Grew (who survives him) at North Euclid Church of God. This church was the foundation of his faith. He loved to sing the old hymns and praise God whenever the doors were open, and he was able. He faithfully served in this church most all his life and he set a high bar for all to follow. They raised 3 children: Kelly (David) Peckham, Jeffrey (companion, Linda View) and Derek (Rachel) Dixon. He was an amazing & always involved grandfather to his grandchildren: Bethany (Mark) Wall, Andrew (Jennifer) Peckham, Joshua Dixon (Cheyanne Aikens), Jessica (William) Shorkey, Samuel, Oliver & Izabella Dixon. He cherished being with his 9 great grandchildren. Especially, Dakota Wall, who in the last year, was one of his caregivers. Jerry is survived by his brother: Albert (Barb) Dixon, his sister in law: Judith Smith & brother in law: Keith Grew (Christine Houle) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents: J. Morley & Verna (Gillespie) Dixon, his sister & brother in law: Reva (William) Carrington and sister in laws: Dorothy Dixon, Alice Grew, his beloved brother in law: Mark Smith. Jerry was an avid outdoor sportsman. He was the ultimate handyman, "Mr. Fix-It" of anything. He enjoyed wood working and he treasured his weekly outings with his favorite uncle, Samuel Rowley. When it came to sports, he was on multiple volleyball teams and golf leagues up to age 77, until Parkinson's stopped him. When it came to watching sports, ANY team from Michigan (national, major or college) was playing on his TV. He enjoyed being a spectator for his great grandchildren's sports, as well. He had a genuine love for people even "giving you the shirt off his back" if you needed it. He was generous to all, truly loving people and spending time with them. His greatest joy was teaching ALL his family, as they gathered for holidays and special events for a meal, how to construct his famous- outdoor, turkey, tin foil, cooker. Due to the recent pandemic, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life memorial will take place at later date.
