Obituary of Don Eugene Shaffer

Donald Eugene Shaffer was received into the arms of his Savior on November 4, 2018 at the age of 84 surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He was born on 1/23/34 to the late Marian and Erma Shaffer on the family farm in Beaverton, MI. In 1944 he was baptized into God's family and became a member of the Beaverton Church of the Brethren where he served on many boards and countless projects. He was married to Nancy Mishler in 1953. Don was a loving husband to Nancy for 65 years and God blessed their marriage with five children. Don was a 1953 graduate of Beaverton High School. He was a pillar of the Beaverton and Gladwin communities as a business owner, reserve police officer and as a volunteer firefighter for 45 years on the Beaverton Area Fire Department. Don was also a master electrician and a farmer. Don is survived by his wife Nancy, children Jane (Eric) Heckart, Mary Somsel, Ron (Mary)Shaffer, and sister Carolyn Tucker, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by, son Dan Shaffer, daughter Jean Mercer, daughter-in-law Donna Shaffer and grandson Todd Shaffer, and sister Bonnie Wolfe. A service of Christian comfort and victory will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018 at the Beaverton Church of the Brethren, 3783 S. Shock Rd, Beaverton. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be used according to the family's wishes. Don was a true blessing to his family and friends and it was a gift to have him as long as we did. His legacy as a devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather will be felt for generations to come.
