Obituary of William Lee DeGroot

William Lee DeGroot passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 75.  He was lovingly surrounded by family in his last hours after a long and brave battle with Parkinson's Disease.  

Bill was married for 15 years to his devoted wife Jane Ann DeGroot.  He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Ted) Hanawalt and Jessica (Mike) Jacobs, niece Kelly (Greg) Crawford and stepchildren Kim (David) Potter, Kelly Small and Denny (Heather May) Springer.  He was especially proud of his grandchildren; Oliver, Sophie, Hoyt and George Hanawalt, Ava and Eleanor Jacobs, as well as his step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and great nieces and nephew. 

He was born in St. Johns, Michigan, on February 6, 1949 to Richard and Lois (Hoyt) DeGroot.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, Hoyt and Chris DeGroot. 

Bill proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in England during the Vietnam War.  He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Psychology from Michigan State University in 1975.  His first job was at the Michigan State Credit Union, and his successful career as a computer sales executive spanned many states and companies including World Computer, Grid and Toshiba.

Bill and Jane loved to travel, especially to the ocean.  He enjoyed golf, fishing, swimming, reading, kayaking and hiking, watching any Michigan State sports, and especially loved a good Michigan State - Michigan rivalry. 

Bill will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.  His “let’s do that” enthusiasm, love of a good joke, and dynamic charm will be carried on in the hearts of his family and friends.
