Richard Earl Ahlberg, age 93, of Bay City, Michigan, passed away on October 28, 2024. Born on August 2, 1931, to Egon and Grace Ahlberg, Dick lived a life full of service and dedication.
He married Janet Trombley on April 30, 1953, and together they shared many happy years until her passing in 2007. Dick was a proud father to three children: Vicki Lynn, who preceded him in death in December 2023, and his sons Rick (Darlene) and Robert. His legacy also includes his grandchildren Timothy (Michelle) Mahoney, Shane Mahoney, Curtis (Courtney) Ahlberg, and Alyssa (Ross) Ginter, and his four great-grandchildren: Korbin French, Nathan Mahoney, Ana, and Mackenzie Ginter, as well as two great-great-grandsons, Shane Mahoney, Jr. and Gabriel French. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Feather, his special companion Margaret Gregg, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his brother Edgar Theodore Ahlberg and sister Sally Clarke.
A proud veteran, Dick served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He furthered his education at Bay City Junior College and spent his career with Dow Chemical and Bay City Public Schools. After retirement, he dedicated countless hours to volunteering at the VA Hospital in Saginaw and was a member of the Bay County Veterans Council Honor Guard, where he honored fellow veterans in numerous ceremonies.
A lifelong member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Dick took pride in being the oldest continuous member of the congregation. . Dick was also proud of his Swedish heritage and loved to visit his relatives there and host them here in Bay City. A lover of music, Dick often sang old-fashioned songs to his young grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice care team from Compassus, especially nurses Amber, Angela, Sara, and Roger, for helping him feel safe and comfortable.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, November 1, 2024, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 501 s. Catherine St., Bay City, MI, with Pastor Timothy Jahn officiating. The family will receive friends at church prior to the service from 10 AM – 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the wishes of the family or to Messiah Lutheran Church.
