Obituary of Timothy Herbert Smith
Please share a memory of Timothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Timothy Herbert Smith "Tim", age 75 of Midland, Michigan, went to be with the Lord January 18, 2024, after a long struggle with cancer. He was born June 15,1948 to Herbert and Margie Smith in Plymouth, Michigan. Tim had a deep love for his family, faith, country, and was an avid outdoorsman.
Tim is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Lynda Smith and children, Kelley King (Ryan) and Karey Heinitz (Justin). He was cherished by his siblings, Jennifer Gordon (Gary), Amy Casey (Robert), Daniel Smith, and sister-in-law, Teresa Smith, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tim was preceded in death by his parents Margie and Herbert Smith, and a brother, Jonathan "Jon".
Tim graduated from Plymouth High School in 1966 and enlisted in the U.S. Airforce, where he served his country overseas during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1971, then continued to serve the public as a decorated Detroit Police Officer, including Police Officer of the Year in 1987.
After retirement from the Detroit Police Department, Tim became a gentleman farmer when he and Lynda moved their family to rural Midland on the scenic Pine River where they could raise their daughters in a country setting. Tim had learned much about building and construction from his father Herb and in retirement put this to good use on the farmstead in many ways including helping neighbors, friends and family in their projects and remodeling the farmhouse and building a new barn. He was also able to fulfill his lifelong dream of owning, training, and riding horses. At the farm, to the delight of his nieces and nephews, in addition to his horses, there were always one or more dogs and sometimes chickens, goats, and cats around. Summer gatherings were especially fun, and many fond memories were made with Uncle Tim sharing his horse, fishing, and target shooting skills. But he was not yet done with his public service and became the Code & Ordinance Enforcement Officer for Lee Township for an additional 20 years.
Tim loved his motorcycles and always enjoyed his rides with cousins, Ed Scheniman and Ron Smith to Sturgis, SD as well as other parts of the country. A favorite spot for him was the family cottage on Arbutus Lake near Traverse City. Tim and Lynda also enjoyed exploring various states, particularly Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, in their motorhome.
Tim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of service, dedication, and love will continue to inspire and resonate with those whose lives he touched.
Memorial gathering plans are undecided.
