Marilyn Niederer

Obituary of Marilyn Jean Niederer

Marilyn Jean Niederer passed to her just reward with God on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Huron Woods Nursing Home after suffering through advanced dementia. The family would like to thank the staff at Huron Woods for taking excellent care of Marilyn during her stay there.

She was born July 28, 1933 in Bay City, Michigan to parents Herb and Olga Schultz. Marilyn lived a full life. She graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1950. Marilyn was married a year later on May 5, 1951 to Sheldon Hans Niederer at Zion Lutheran Church. They moved first to Tucson, AZ after Sheldon “Don” joined the Air Force, he was eventually stationed in Germany during the Korean war. They gave birth to their first son Bruce Sheldon in Tucson in 1953. After returning from Germany they were stationed in Lincoln, NB where they had their second son Randolf Lynn in 1955. After discharge they returned to Bay City where their third son Nelson Hans was born in 1957. They later moved to Livonia, MI where Don worked as a die designer and Marilyn, after raising her 3 boys, worked as a secretary to the Principal at Church Hill High School. In 1971 they moved back to Bay City and bought Don's Qwik Stop on Patterson Road in Bangor township.

Family was the most important thing to both Marilyn and Don. They suffered the loss of Randy to cancer in 1987. Don passed in November 2012 at age 85 from complications due to congestive heart failure. Marilyn and Don remained married until his death – 61 years! Marilyn loved cruising and racing as crew on the family sailboat Triple Threat. She enjoyed skiing, singing in the choir at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, and for awhile, singing barbershop songs with the Sweet Adelines.

Marilyn is survived by her sons, Bruce and Nelson and his wife Jody; granddaughter, Tiffany; and her three grandsons, Daniel and his wife Caitlin, Eric and his wife Tara, and Alex. Before her passing Marilyn got to meet her two great-granddaughters, Hermione Rose (Dan and Caitlin) and Eila Gail (Eric and Tara). Marilyn was very proud of her grandsons Dan (who served two tours in Iraq as a Marine), Alex (who served four years in the Navy,) and Eric (who graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelors Degree in Finance).
